Manchester United v West Ham United Match Preview & Trends

David Moyes’ latest return to Old Trafford to face his former side is perhaps in unfamiliar and unexpected circumstances on this occasion. His West Ham side have realistic Champions League qualification aspirations and are surprise contenders for a top-4 place after a stellar season so far. Manchester United’s home form has been uncharacteristically inconsistent this year with the Red Devils struggling to replicate their blistering away form at the Theatre of Dreams. This won’t be helped by the continued unavailability of Edinson Cavani, the expected absence of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial picking up a knock in Thursday’s Europa League tie with AC Milan. This leaves Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with just 19 year old Mason Greenwood as the club’s only fit senior striker. Could we see another gem plucked from the academy to follow in the footsteps of Rashford or Greenwood himself? It is more than likely that Solskjaer will make use of the versatility of some of his wide-men and midfielders to rotate around the attacking formation and supply the goals, as we saw in the aforementioned Milan game when Amad Diallo netted his first goal for the club after replacing Martial. The Hammers have no such issue in front of goal with Michail Antonio and Tomas Soucek in fine goalscoring form with additions from Jesse Lingard and Jared Bowen supplementing the claret and blue attack. Lingard will be absent this weekend due to the terms of his loan deal not allowing him to face his parent club which is a major blow given his excellent performances since arriving at the club. In their last six league matches, Manchester United have won two and drawn four. West Ham, have won four, drawn one and lost one in their last six. A West Ham win would reduce the gap with Manchester Utd to a 3-point difference in the league table, and it would be the end of a 8-match unbeaten streak for Manchester Utd.
