Tottenham Hotspur v Aston Villa Match Preview & Trends

Will want-away Kane star or sulk for Spurs?

Both managers will want to end the season as strongly as possible for different reasons ahead the next campaign. Dean Smith has decisions to make over loan stars like Ross Barkley and will want more from the Chelsea midfielder if he is to convince the Villa manager he is worthy of a permanent move to the club. Interim Spurs boss Ryan Mason will be keen to get the club into Europe in some fashion before the new permanent manager is appointed.

Mason has bigger worries in front of him after the revelation that star striker Harry Kane has expressed his desire to leave the club this summer. Does Mason play him and put him further in the shop window or does he leave him out risking a Europan place based on principles and club commitment? It is a tough call for the young manager who would ideally bank on the England Captains goals but could face a fan backlash in protest if he does field the marksman on Wednesday evening.

Villa skipper Jack Grealish will be hoping for a start after making his welcome return off the bench in the last two games. The club talisman has been badly missed by the midlands club and from a personal perspective, he will want to remind England boss, Gareth Southgate of his qualities before this summer’s European Championships.

Aston Villa have scored in 82% of their away matches and 63% of the goals they let in were conceded at Villa Park. 76% of Villa’s Premier League away games this season finished with an odd total number of goals and Dean Smith’s side have won just one of their last 5 Premier League fixtures.

Since the managerial change which saw Ryan Mason take interim charge of the coaching duties when Jose Mourinho was sacked, Tottenham have been a bit of a mixed bag and is hard to predict. This is particularly true at the back where no matter which combination they try. Eric Dier is capable of sublime defending but can often get lost and looks like a midfielder playing center-half. Toby Alderwiereld has not been the same player since losing his long-term partner Jan Vertonghen last summer and despite glimpses of promise Joe Rondon has failed to hold down a place since his move from Swansea City.
