Tottenham Hotspur v Wolverhampton Wanderers Match Preview & Trends

Spurs looking to breathe life into their European dreams

Wolves visit the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday afternoon to face a Spurs side with little direction at the moment. Since the managerial change which saw Ryan Mason take interim charge of the coaching duties when Jose Mourinho was sacked, Tottenham have been a bit of a mixed bag and is hard to predict. This is particularly true at the back where no matter which combination they try. Eric Dier is capable of sublime defending but can often get lost and looks like a midfielder playing center-half. Toby Alderwiereld has not been the same player since losing his long-term partner Jan Vertonghen last summer and despite glimpses of promise Joe Rondon has failed to hold down a place since his move from Swansea City.

Tottenham and Wolverhampton have both scored in their last 6 meetings but Wolves have won just one of their last 5 Premier League away games. Nuno Espirito Santo’s men have endured a tough time away from their Molineux base this season. This can perhaps be attributed to not replacing the focal point of their attack when Raul Jiminez suffered his season-ending head injury at the start of the campaign. Since that horrific incident, the Wolves boss has persevered with using smaller men in attack and not having the focal point to base playoff which Jiminez usually provides. To say they have struggled to adapt is an understatement and will hope the big Mexican striker can return to full-fitness during pre-season.

Spurs have scored the first goal of the game in the last 5 games against Wolverhampton Wanderers and will be looking to the prolific combination of Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son to provide another good start on Sunday afternoon. Tottenham have only won one of their last 5 home games against Wolves and have conceded at least one goal from the same opponents in the last 6 home fixtures against them. There has been a first-half goal scored in each of Tottenham’s last 7 home games in a row but there has been fewer than four cards in each of the last 5 league games involving Spurs.
