Clash Of The Big-Guns In Opening Round

What a treat we are in for as the World Champions, France,  travel to Munich to take on 3-time European Champions Germany at the Football Arena. Both teams qualified as group winners with each side losing the solitary game in the process. This mouth-watering first-round contest between the two European heavyweights is a scintillating prospect for all who usually have to wait until the knock-out phase to see a game of this magnitude.

Having announced that he will be stepping down as head coach after this tournament, Germany boss Joachim Low will want to go out in style. The talent he has at his disposal is very exciting and the blend of youth and experience that Germany possesses make them favorites to do well in this competition. Reaching the semi-finals in the two previous Euros would be a success to many, but not the Germans. Captain Toni Kroos will know that lifting the trophy will be the expectation amongst the German fans after conceding just 7 goals in qualifying.

The French have an extremely strong squad at their disposal and could field an eleven worthy of competing at the tournament made up from those not selected. Losing in the final to Portugal at Euro 2016 will spur them on to go one better this time around but first they must tackle a robust and efficient German side. Negotiating the group of death will be no easy task and Didier Deschamp will know that any mistake could be catastrophic for his team.

Key trends

Germany have not beaten France since the 2014 World Cup

France averaged 24.5 minutes of possession per goal in qualifying

Germany boasts the best disciplinary record of the 24 finalists despite being one of the few teams to receive a red card
