Hungary v Portugal Match Preview & Trends

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Holders Need Strong Start In Group Of Death

Current champions Portugal travel to Budapest to take on Hungary in both team’s opening fixture in Group F. The Puskas Arena is the setting for this match and Hungary against France, both of which will be pivotal to the home side’s chances of progression. In all likelihood, the big three will expect to beat Hungary and rely on results against each other to determine the order of the group. Hungary will not want to lie down without a fight and in front of their own supporters will be keen to put on a spirited display in each game.

Portugal are far more than just Cristiano Ronaldo but having one of the greatest to ever play the game as your captain is certainly a help. Their inspirational record-breaker scored 11 goals in qualifying and will not just want to lift the Henri Delaunay trophy again but will inevitably have an eye on the golden boot as well. Having qualified behind the Ukraine, coach Fernando Santos will know that nothing but the best from his star-studded squad will do for every fixture in order to progress.

Having reached the round of 16 at Euro 2016, a similar success would be astronomical for Hungary boss Marco Rossi to fathom given the strength of the group. His side contains a few experienced heads who have mixed it with the Champions League big boys for RB Leipzig but will be under no illusion of the task ahead of them. Finishing fourth in qualifying was a grounding experience but convince victories in the playoffs over Bulgaria and Iceland will have built momentum and confidence.

Key trends

There are 20 years between the youngest member of the Portugal squad (Nuno Mendes, 18) and the oldest (Pepe, 38).

Hungary only scored 8 goals in the qualifying campaign

Only Germany and Belgium had better discipline than Portugal in the qualifying rounds.
