Netherlands v Ukraine Match Preview & Trends
Dutch Seeking To Replicate the Glory Of 1988
Having all their group stage matches in Amsterdam will be a huge benefit to Frank De Boer’s Netherlands side. They host Andriy Shevchenko’s Ukraine at the Johan Cruyff Arena in the second match in Group C, which on paper looks like a really tough group for all teams.
Ukraine are a robust outfit that does not let much past them, in their 8 qualifying matches they coned just 4 goals. They have a tendency to draw a lot of games but with one of the world’s best-ever strikers in charge, if chances arise, they will be sure to take them. If Shevchenko cannot inspire the Ukrainian front men to find the net, then not many could. This will be the third straight European Championships that they have attended having previously either not competed or not qualified.
Holland will be amongst the favorites despite not winning their group and missing influential skipper Virgil van Dijk through injury. They have quality in abundance and will be confident of progression if they can keep a happy camp. The young group assembled by De Boer possesses significant experience and if they gel there is no doubt they will be a threat to any side in the tournament.
Key trends
Ukraine only conceded 4 goals in the qualifying campaign
The Netherlands won the 1988 Euros but did not qualify for the last tournament in 2016
