Spain v Poland Match Preview & Trends

Poland seek qualification as Spain flatter to deceive

Luis Enrique will hope his side are more clinical and a little more creative than in the opening match. Their failure to convert possession into opportunities against Sweden cost them a win and left them behind Poland in the race for Group E qualification. Poland will be missing the influential Gregor Krychowiak through suspension after his sending off in the win over Slovakia and will rely even more so on talisman Robert Lewandowski as they push for a knockout spot.

History favours the Spaniards with Poland only ever having beaten them once in ten meetings throughout history. Spain are not the force they were a decade ago. That dominant side has been broken up and a new breed has come though which are still finding their feet at international level. Poland may feel this could be a massive opportunity to take advantage of their evolving opposition for their own benefit.

Poland covered 104.5km against the Slovak’s and maintained a passing accuracy of 85% having gained 57% possession. The Poles made 57 passes into the attacking third with 31 of those in key areas. They completed 9/25 crosses, which left them at 36%. In comparison, when Spain faced Sweden, they covered 110.7km against the Swede’s and maintained a passing accuracy of 89% having gained 75% possession. The Spanish made 96 passes into the attacking third with 46 of those in key areas. They completed 2/7 crosses, which left them at 29%.
