Spain v Sweden Match Preview & Trends
Familiar Foes Collide In Bilbao
These two sides met in qualifying, where they drew one with Spain winning the other match convincingly. They have obviously been drawn together in the European Championships and are set to face one another again later this year in two World Cup Qualifiers. S if they don’t know each other inside out by now, they certainly will by Christmas.
The ever-young Zlatan Ibrahimovic fresh out of international retirement after a 5-year gap will be hoping to be the inspiration for Sweden who never really replaced him (an unenviable task). The 1992 semi-finalists and 2004 quarter-finalists will be hoping to escape the group stages, an accolade that has eluded them in the last 3 European Championships. Losing to Spain was their only qualifying defeat and coach Janne Andersson will be quietly confident of progression.
Three-time winners Spain will feel the expectation on them as they play all the group games at home in the San Mames Stadium. The depth of talent in the squad and the knowledge and experience of coach Luis Enrique seem a perfect combination for success. The Spaniards went undefeated in qualifying and are a threat from the many corners they force teams to concede. They will try to manipulate the ball and dominate possession rather than counter-attack but are not as solid as they were once were at the back.
Key trends
Spain were the 6th best defensive side in the qualifiers
Sweden have the best shots on target average in Group E with 42.83%
During the qualifiers, Spain averaged an impressive 10 corners per match.
