Turkey v Wales Match Preview & Trends

Must-Win game for both sides looms large

For all their efforts last Friday, ultimately Turkey came away with nothing and were outclassed by the Italians in the opening game. The Turks ran their socks off and made life extremely difficult for Italy but that kind of pressing and sustained pressure cannot be sustained for 90minutes in the heat they encountered. Senol Gunes’ men will hope to kickstart their tournament against Wales this time around.

Wales were largely outplayed against Switzerland and will know that this match in Baku against Turkey is their best chance of a victory in the group stage with Italy on the horizon. Despite scoring through Kieffer Moore’s header, Wales, just like Turkey did not manage to create any clear-cut opportunities.

Robert Page will be aware that they will need to improve on their passing accuracy and forward endeavor to progress from the group. Turkey will be hurting and looking to build some sort of momentum after a disappointing start. Wales managed 9 attempts on target and had a 29% cross-completion rate. This will have to get better if Moore and captain Gareth Bale are to get the service required to trouble the Turks.

Key trends

Turkey’s players accumulated 105.8km in the opening game against Italy

Wales have a 79% passing accuracy

Turkey have made just 13 passes into the attacking third and created no clear chances
