Wales v Switzerland Match Preview & Trends

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Low Scorers Do Battle In Baku

The second game in Group A takes us to Azerbaijan where Wales take on Switzerland in the Baku Olympic Stadium. This contest is a contrasting tale of statistics whereby The Swiss tend to be wasteful with their goal attempts and averaging a low 32% shots on target rate. Wales on the other hand are just under 40% in the same category and convert their opportunities when they are presented with them.

Switzerland are not afraid to shoot and that perhaps explains their low OT scores, they like to keep the ball and can dominate teams in possession (64% average). The Welsh are more of a counter-attacking side who have less possession (41% on average) but look to hurt you on the break with the pace and precision of Daniel James and Gareth Bale amongst others.

The fitness of veteran Xherdan Shaqiri will be pivotal to the progression of the Swiss team. The Liverpool midfielder compliments his Premier League compatriot, Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka with both adopting very different attributes and skills. At Euro 2016, Switzerland made it out of the group stages for the first time in their history and will see anything on par with this as a success.

At that same tournament, which was Wales’ first-ever European Championship, they reached the Semi-Finals under Chris Coleman’s leadership. Caretaker boss Robert Page will dream of similar success four years on from that famous achievement.

Key trends

Wales scored only 10 goals in their 8 qualifying matches

With shots on target at 32%, Switzerland had the 3rd lowest of all the qualifiers.

North Macedonia were the only team to average less possession than Wales during the qualification stage.
