Chelsea v West Bromwich Albion Match Preview & Trends

Another clean-sheet for the Blues?

West Brom travel to Stamford Bridge for the opening Premier League fixture after the international break knowing that the stats are against them. They haven’t beaten the Blues since 2015 and further analysis reveals that this Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off could be an uphill battle for Sam Allardyce’s men. Chelsea have not conceded in 4 of their last 6 home games against West Bromwich and have scored the first goal of the game in the last 6 home matches between the two.

There have been fewer than 3 goals scored in total in each of Chelsea’s last 10 games and in each of West Bromwich’s last 7 games. This has been a common theme at home for The Blues this season with less than 3 goals totaled in 7 straight games at Stamford Bridge. Thomas Tuchel will hope that summer signing Timo Werner can find his scoring touch soon after blanking for Germany in the recent World Cup Qualifiers. The Manager’s fellow countryman hasn’t been firing on all cylinders since his big-money move from RB Leipzig and will hope for an opportunity against struggling West Brom.

The Baggies have won just one of their last 5 Premier League games and have conceded at least 1 goal in 93% of their away matches. Whilst defense has marginally improved since they made the managerial change before Christmas, scoring goals remains a problem. Allardyce won’t want to hear that Chelsea have outscored their opponents in both halves in each of their last 2 matches and in each of their last 3 home games. The task ahead for the Baggies is further amplified by the fact that Chelsea have kept a clean sheet in the last 7 matches.

Interestingly, there has been at least one red card in the last 3 games between Chelsea and West Bromwich and a card inside the first 30 minutes in 8 of the last 10 matches between the two.

Key trends

Chelsea have kept a clean sheet in the last 7 home matches

West Brom have scored 30% of their goals in the first 15 minutes.

Chelsea have picked up an average of 1.86 Points Per Game in their 14 matches played at home. West Bromwich Albion’s average Points Per Game in their 14 away games is 0.5.
