Crystal Palace v Aston Villa Match Preview & Trends

Can Grealish inspire Villa once again?

Both managers will want to end the season as strong as possible as they no doubt look forward to a break and to think about what they’ll need for the next campaign. Dean Smith has decisions to make over loan stars like Ross Barkley and will want more from the Chelsea midfielder if he is to convince the Villa manager he is worthy of a permanent move to the club.

Villa skipper Jack Grealish will be hoping for a start after making his unexpected return off the bench in the last game. The club talisman has been badly missed by the midlands club and from a personal perspective, he will want to remind England boss, Gareth Southgate of his qualities before this summer’s European Championships.

Roy Hodgson will once again hope that the combination of Ebrechi Eze and Wilfried Zaha supporting Belgian International Christain Benteke can fire the goals to mask over his side’s defensive problems. The Eagles have not been reliable at the back in the absence of club stalwart James Tompkins which has left Gary Cahill without a regular center-back partner due to the continued injury problems faced by Tompkins and Mamadou Sahko since his move from Liverpool.

Aston Villa have scored in 82% of their away matches and 63% of the goals they let in were conceded at Villa Park. 76% of Villa’s Premier League away games this season finished with an odd total number of goals and Dean Smith’s side have won just one of their last 5 Premier League fixtures.

Crystal Palace have won just one of their last 5 Premier League games and only one of their last 5 Premier League home fixtures. The Eagles have scored the first goal of the game in 5 out of the last 6 home games against Aston Villa and will hope for another good start this weekend at Selhurst Park.
