Turkey v Italy Match Preview & Trends

Anticipation Builds For Opening Match

The opening match of the tournament sees Roberto Mancini’s Italy face Turkey in Rome on Friday night. The Azzurri were totally dominant in qualifying winning all 10 matches in impressive fashion. Turkey were defensively sound, only conceding 3 goals in the qualifying campaign but were not exactly prolific upfront.

The Turks managed a home victory over much-fancied France, winning 2-0 but struggled for goals in general. They did however get on the scoresheet in a vital 1-1 draw in Paris in the return fixture. Turkey are a stubborn, well-organised outfit that will be no pushovers for anyone and will certainly not be phased by going up against the mighty Italians.

The Italians only scored 17 goals over the 7 matches that don’t take into account the two fixtures against Lichenstein (20 goals in total) and when they hit 9 in Rome when they hosted Armenia. They boast an impressive front line that will threaten most sides and will be their usual defensively robust selves.

Key trends

Italy scored a goal for every 15 minutes of possession.

Turkey conceded only 3 goals in qualifying

Italy averaged 7.3 corners per game.
